In a divorce matter that is receiving attention in neighboring Connecticut, the couple who owns the famous Carnegie Deli in New York is battling over secret family recipes as their marriage ends. The 63-year-old owner alleged that her former spouse cheated on her with a waitress at their popular eating establishment. She also claimed that he gave his mistress the recipes to some of their most famous dishes, including pastrami sandwiches and cheesecake.
The owners of the deli were married for 22 years. She decided to file for divorce because of her ex-husband's unfaithfulness, alleging that he has been involved with another woman for years, supports her financially, gives her jewelry and even gave her money for plastic surgery. The woman says that in addition, he gave the waitress a wealth of information about the restaurant and its recipes. The mistress, a 61-year-old immigrant from Thailand, has sent the information to her native country. Her family now opened their own restaurant there, and the menu includes some of the disputed items.
The owner decided to take legal action against her former husband for his breach of trust and plans to pursue civil litigation against him. In a similar case, a famous fashion designer ended her marriage with her spouse. During the divorce battle, she claimed he was designing clothes that looked like hers. They eventually settled their dispute at the beginning of 2013.
Some couples have complex marital assets that need to be protected during a divorce. A family law attorney might be able to help prepare a prenuptial agreement in order to address issues regarding separately-owned as well as marital property.
