Riding motorcycles safely

There is no question that anyone who operates any type of vehicle should take steps to ensure they are doing so in a safe manner. This may be particularly true for those who enjoy riding motorcycles. While it is possible for anyone involved in a crash to be injured the fact that motorcyclists have so little in the way of protection makes it even more likely that this will occur. According to one statistic, motorcyclists are 26 times more likely to lose a life in a crash than automobile occupants.

Because of this sad reality it is important that motorcyclists take steps to keep themselves safe. There are multiple things that can be done to ensure this.

The first is to make sure that they are dressed appropriately. Protective clothing and gear is usually the only thing between a motorcyclist and the road. Helmets are vital as is being completely covered by clothing that is thick.

Next, it is important to be aware of one’s surroundings. Because of the smaller size of the motorcycle it is necessary to be able to quickly react if a car does not see it. Along those same lines, motorcyclists should understand that it takes automobiles longer to stop than motorcycles.

When riding at night, the most important thing it to make sure that the motorcycle and its rider are seen. Here again, because of the smaller size and the lack of lights on the motorcycle its rider must overcompensate by wearing reflective material.

Last, and perhaps most important, don’t sacrifice safety to look cool. While the cool factor is certainly a reason why many people enjoy riding motorcycles it should not interfere with safety. Serious injuries can be sustained by riders that are not wearing appropriate safety equipment, and in some instances, those injuries can be life threatening.
