UPDATE: A statement from the police indicated that the bus driver, a 63-year-old man, was merging into the right lane when he lost control of the vehicle on the snow-covered highway and smashed into a metal barrier. Part of the guardrail impaled the bus on the driver’s side baggage compartment.
The bus involved in the crash is currently being held at United Towing salvage yard in Branford.
According to federal records, Dahlia Bus Group has previously had issues with unsafe driving. Dahlia bus drivers have been cited for speeding, tailgating and even driving under the influence of alcohol. It is unclear whether charges will be brought against the bus driver involved in this crash.
Thirty-six people suffered minor to severe injuries. As of Tuesday afternoon, 11 people remained hospitalized, seven of whom are in critical condition.
Local Westbrook police have confirmed that four people have been critically injured and dozens more hurt following a serious bus accident on I-95 just north of Madison.
According to reports, the rollover accident occurred around noon between Exits 60 and 61 on the Interstate, resulting in northbound closures in the area as first responders tended to those involved.
With more than 70 passengers on board the Dahlia tour bus, emergency crews had to remove the windshield to enable workers access to the passengers and to help remove them from the bus. Sources have also indicated that while 30 were able to leave the vehicle on their own accord, those hurt in the crash were rushed to Yale Trauma Center in New Haven, CT.
An official from the hospital confirmed to a local news station that they received 22 passengers, with transit times to the hospital taking longer than usual due to poor driving conditions.
The roadway reopened just before rush hour on Monday evening.
