Number of Fatal Pedestrian Accidents Rising Across the U.S.

Walking America’s streets is becoming increasingly dangerous, as the number of fatal pedestrian accidents is at an all-time high. The Governor's Highway Safety Association predicts a 10 percent increase in pedestrian deaths for 2015, compared to 2014 numbers; the largest year-to-year hike in the history of national traffic death recordkeeping.
Between 2009 and 2014, U.S. pedestrian fatalities rose a shocking 19 percent, totaling 4,884 deaths in 2014. People traveling by foot make up the largest percentage of traffic deaths over the past 25 years; overall they account for 15 percent of all traffic accident fatalities.
The Governor's Highway Safety Administration identified factors that have contributed to the rise in pedestrian fatalities.
- Both drivers and those walking are increasingly using smartphones while performing these activities, distracting them from focusing on the task at hand.
- More people are choosing to walk instead of drive due to the health benefits as well as high costs of owning a vehicle, creating an increase in pedestrians.
- Alcohol is a contributor in a large percentage of pedestrian deaths; in 34 percent of cases where a pedestrian is killed by a vehicle, the pedestrian had a blood alcohol content of 0.08 or more. In 15 percent of deadly pedestrian accidents, the driver had a blood alcohol content at or higher than the legal limit.
Dangerous for Pedestrians, Safer for Drivers
While the rise in fatal pedestrian accidents is raising concern for pedestrian safety, the number of overall traffic fatalities has fallen; between 2009 and 2014, total traffic fatalities fell from 33,883 to 32,675. There are fewer fatalities involving vehicle drivers and passengers, in part due to the improved crash safety of vehicles and the implementation of technology which aids drivers in avoiding accidents.
