Speed Humps Adding Dangers for Bicyclists in Hartford Neighborhood

Installed in September 2014 to decrease speeding in the Behind the Rocks neighborhood, speed humps are actually endangering bicyclists.
A group of cyclists and residents are raising their concerns about speed humps on Brookfield Street after noticing that drivers veer into the bike lane instead of going over the hump. The humps, which are lower and wider than regular speed bumps, cover both lanes of traffic. However, the outer parking lanes and bike lane remain flat, which gives drivers a way to continue speeding down the road.
This is the second time residents have brought up their concerns over the speed humps in the area.
Fortunately, no cyclists have been injured, but the dangers are very real. According to the Hartford Courant, a recent visit to the area revealed that nearly every driver seen used the gap to avoid the humps.
City officials plan to install some short, vertical plastic posts that will be placed in front of, and behind, each speed hump. The posts should discourage drivers from veering into the bike lane. Still, the solution must be proposed to residents to determine if they believe this is the best way to solve the issue.
About Bicycle Accidents
The majority of fatal bicycle accidents occur in urban areas at non-intersections. More than half of the fatal accidents occur between 3 p.m. and midnight. Many bicyclists report feeling threatened by drivers when motorists drove too close, too fast or nearly hit a cyclist.
It is up to bicyclists and drivers to share the road and obey all the rules of the road in order to prevent an accident.
The bicycle accident lawyers at D'Amico & Pettinicchi have seen the devastation that occurs when drivers fail to share the road and collide with bicyclists.
