A three-month-old infant died after the car she was in was rear-ended by a tractor trailer on Saturday afternoon on I-395 in Plainfield. The infant was in the back seat in a rear-facing car seat when the car was hit and veered off onto the shoulder.
After hitting the car, the tractor trailer veered off to the right and down an embankment, eventually stopping in the woods.
The infant and the driver of the car were taken to William Backus Emergency Center where the infant was pronounced dead a short time later.
The driver of the car was released after receiving treatment for non-life threatening injuries. The tractor trailer driver was not injured in the crash.
Authorities re-routed traffic on I-395 for seven hours to investigate the crash.
Regulators Propose Speed Limiters for Trucks
Saturday's fatal crash is another painful reminder of the dangers of truck accidents. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) have proposed adding speed limiters to trucks and other heavy-duty vehicles to prevent these accidents.
Regulators believe that adding these devices to trucks and other vehicles over 26,000 pounds could save as many as 500 lives per year.
The NHTSA and FMCSA are seeking public input on what speed limit to use on speed-limiting devices. Regulators have considered limiting these large vehicles to as little as 60 miles per hour.
