A motorcyclist suffered life-threatening injuries after he was hit by a car on East Main Street, also known as Route 1, on Sunday afternoon.
The victim was heading west on Route 1 on his Harley Davidson motorcycle when he was hit by a car as it made a left turn onto Mill Plain Road.
The rider was treated at the scene by Fire Department Paramedics and transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital for further treatment. The 79-year-old driver of the car was not injured in the crash.
Route 1 was shut down for almost seven hours on Sunday, according to the state department of transportation.
Police have not made any arrests and are still investigating the crash.
Protecting Yourself from Motorcycle Accidents
Motorcycle accidents are more dangerous than car accidents because riders do not have the benefits of seatbelts, airbags or any of the other safety features of traditional passenger vehicles.
Following these tips can go a long way toward protecting yourself from an accident:
- Always wear a helmet. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 37 out of every 100 motorcyclists who die in crashes while not wearing helmets would have survived if they were wearing helmets.
- Seek professional training. More than 90 percent of motorcycle riders involved in motorcycle accidents taught themselves how to ride or were taught by friends.
- Wear protective clothing. Goggles, sunglasses, a jacket, long pants, boots, and gloves can go a long way toward preventing serious injuries in an accident.
