Multiple Lawsuits Claim Ethicon Physiomesh Caused Severe Injuries

In June, Ethicon, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, voluntarily recalled all Physiomesh patches after studies revealed the product exposed hernia patients to a high risk of hernia recurrence and corrective surgery.
Physiomesh patches are used for laparoscopic ventral hernia repair. The patches have a thick coating on both sides designed to prevent the mesh from sticking to bowels and tissues, as the mesh contains polypropylene, which can cause severe injuries if it attaches to other body parts.
The likelihood of Physiomesh tearing apart inside patients and migrating within the body is increased because it contains less polypropylene than other mesh products.
Unfortunately, the recall came too late for those who already had surgery with this product. Patients affected by defective Physiomesh experienced severe injuries, including:
- Intestinal blockage
- Chronic pain
- Mesh migration to other areas of the body
Several patients have filed lawsuits against Ethicon alleging the Physiomesh hernia patch caused severe health problems and required corrective surgery:
- On April 1, 2016, a man filed a lawsuit claiming he was diagnosed with an infection around the mesh, resulting in an intestinal fistula and two abscesses.
- In September, a hernia patient in Florida sued Ethicon claiming she required surgery to remove the mesh after it grew into her intestines.
- In November, a man in Massachusetts filed a defective product lawsuit against Ethicon alleging the mesh caused hernia recurrence and loops in his bowel. The lawsuit also states that Ethicon failed to warn the medical community and the public about the risks.
In addition to lawsuits filed against Ethicon concerning Physiomesh, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has received 650 adverse event reports to its Adverse Event Reporting System.
