On Thursday morning, a 31-year-old Middletown resident was struck and killed by a tractor trailer on I-95 South between exits 70 and 71 in Old Lyme.
According to state police, the victim parked her car on the right side of the road and got out to check on her one-year-old. The truck hit her when she was standing by the driver's side door. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The victim's daughter and the other passenger in the car did not sustain injuries. However, as a precaution, the child was taken to Shoreline Clinic. The tractor trailer driver refused to be taken to the hospital.
The accident is still being investigated and witnesses are urged to call State Police Troop F at 860-399-2100 with any information.
The crash closed I-95 South for several hours as the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection worked to clean up gasoline that had spilled out of the tractor trailer. Traffic in the area was made worse by a 3 p.m. three-car crash between exits 75 and 74 on I-95 North in East Lyme.
