ambulance outside new haven hospitalA 42-year-old pedestrian from Waterbury was struck and killed in a fatal accident on Tuesday afternoon in New Haven.

The woman was on the sidewalk at the corner of York Street and South Frontage Road when she was struck by a car and killed.

The car was veering into the left turn only lane when it crossed the yellow line and continued straight onto the sidewalk, causing the fatal collision, according to police.

The driver was transported to the hospital to receive treatment for unknown injuries and is cooperating with police on the investigation.

Police are trying to piece together surveillance video of the accident to review what happened.

The intersection where the accident occurred is very busy, particularly between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. during shift change at the nearby hospital. There have been multiple fatal accidents at York Street and South Frontage Road, including a deadly pedestrian accident in 2008.

Pedestrian Crash Data

More than 4,000 pedestrians were killed in car accidents in 2013, according to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). This amounts to one pedestrian fatality every two hours.

Meanwhile, more than 150,000 pedestrians received medical treatment in 2013 for injuries from traffic accidents.

Pedestrians over the age of 65 are at higher risk of being involved in a fatal crash, as people in this age group accounted for 19 percent of pedestrian traffic deaths in 2013.

NHTSA data also shows that most fatal pedestrian crashes occur at night in urban areas at non-intersection locations.

While some pedestrian accidents are the fault of the pedestrian, many more are caused by negligent drivers who were not paying attention or driving recklessly.

In these situations, victims and their families may be able to file a personal injury or wrongful death lawsuit to obtain compensation.
