Parking Lot Accidents
Each year, there are more than 50,000 car accidents in parking garages and parking lots, according to the National Safety Council (NSC).
These crashes result in more than 60,000 injuries and cause approximately 500 deaths. About 10 percent of parking lot crash deaths occur when someone is hit by a car that is backing up.
One of the main culprits in parking lot accidents is distracted driving. A NSC survey from last year revealed that drivers engage in many activities besides driving when they are traveling through parking lots, including:
- Making phone calls (66 percent)
- Sending or reading text messages (56 percent)
- Reading or sending emails (50 percent)
- Making social media posts (52 percent)
- Taking pictures or watching videos on their smartphones (49 percent)
Drivers may assume there is less risk of an accident in a parking lot because they are traveling at a slower speed. However, the truth is that parking lots and garages are intense driving environments that require drivers to pay close attention to their surroundings, according to Deborah A.P. Hersman, the NSC's president and CEO.
